Commissioning a new piece of music:
1. Think about- what will the music be for, what type of occasion, what venue, what voice and instruments, what length, and what players and level of difficulty?
2. I hope you will listen to some music I have already written to see whether something similar will fill your needs. On the Audio Samples page you can click on the play icon to listen, and if you would like to hear a composition other than what is there, please email me and I will make a demo recording available.
3. When you are ready you can let me know your needs and we can start discussing feasibility, timing and the commission fee. Fees vary greatly depending on the size of the project, the amount of the composer's time needed, and the level of formality and complexity required. Comparatively speaking, my fees are moderate.
4. I would recommend you visit the website of "Meet the Composer"
meetthecomposer.org
You can request their publication "An Individual's Guide to Commissioning Music."
Obtaining sheet music and recordings of compositions by Chuck Holdeman:
1. Most compositions including the oboe and bassoon are published by TrevCo Music:
trevcomusic.com
The composer search function is alphabetized.
2. Contact the composer via this website for information about sheet music for all other work: opera, orchestra, band, music for harp, music for harpsichord, chamber music including "Sonate en Trio" for flute, 'cello, and harpsichord or piano, "Melomanique" for flute and harpsichord or piano, and songs, including "At the Bend" 8 song settings of poems by W. S. Merwin for medium voice and piano, and "Three Sam Hamill Songs" for tenor, bassoon, and harp.
3. My oboe concerto, "Concerto tre d'uno" is available for purchase with a piano reduction from Trevco. Orchestral performance materials can be rented. The soloist plays oboe d'amore in the first movement (or alternatively oboe), oboe in the second movement and English horn in the third. Here is the rental contact info, and to reserve a set of parts, a letter is required from your organization, generally an orchestra:

4. There are two commercial recordings: "Lyric Seasons" for bassoon and harp is available for download via CD Baby, Amazon, or iTunes. Or use the contact page if you would like a CD copy (which is a non-compressed version and therefore sounds better.) And "Sonate en Trio" is available either as a download or CD from Meyer Media or Amazon. This work is for flute, 'cello, and harpsichord, and is on the album "Florescence" by Melomanie, for whom the trio was written.
5. There are three self-produced CD's: $10 each plus shipping- contact the composer via this site-
"Basson Seul" an all-original solo bassoon album, including recordings made in the "Cistern" an empty 2 million gallon underground water tank in Port Townsend, Washington, originally built by the army, with a very long reverberation time- amazing acoustics!
"Buffet Trio" features one original, "Buffet Music" for clarinet, bassoon, and piano, plus music by Kreutzer and Glinka.
"The North American French Bassoon Quartet" features one original "Verdi a piacere" an expansion on the brief quartet passage in the Verdi Requiem, plus music by Corrette, Norris, Gonneville, Lussier, and Mignone.
